Thoughts from the Site Architect on the "sustainability question"...
Everyone seems to have a different definition of what the 's' word means. Perhaps my favorite comes from Derrick Jensen:
"Any culture that requires the importation of resources to survive is not sustainable."
By that definition, we're a LONG way off. It would also exclude lots of businesses that are listed in this directory, as their inventories are full of products made from around the globe. On the other hand, a small business in Olympia is measurably more sustainable than a corporation. So if we are able to steer business away from a big mean corporation that is sucking all of the profits out of our community, we're happy.
We're also excited at the prospect of this site creating dialogue about the issue.
Perhaps it will eventually be used so that... small businesses can raise the bar on their own standards... so local producers can find out what gaps exist on what is being made in town... and of course, that it becomes very easy for consumers to get their needs met with locally-produced goods.
Yes, another world is possible and we hope you'll help us build it. |
